Abstract
The term metabolic plasmid, as opposed to resistance plasmid, refers to the encoding of multistep reaction sequences leading from noncellular structures to anaplerotic intermediates. The alternate term, degradative or catabolic plasmid, also denotes the control of these predominately energy coupled processes yielding principally the 2 to 4 carbon acids whose metabolism is chromosome encoded. The aromatic and terpene oxidative pathways, for example, each comprise more than a dozen reactions, several catalyzed by multiprotein enzyme systems. The genes are organized in 2 or more clusters under positive pleiotropic and secondary control. Figure 1 illustrates the phenotypes encoded by the “terpene” plasmid CAM, the “aromatic” ones NAH and SAL, and the “heterocyclic” NIC plasmid. For illustration we shall consider the state, structure, and control of CAM and of NAH /SAL. A related aromatic plasmid, TOL, will be considered by participants who have made the primary contributions.
