Phospholipids and Platelet Aggregation

  • Chapter
Lipid Metabolism and Its Pathology

Abstract

Platelet is the subject of more and more numerous studies, justified in the first place by its essential role in haemostasis and coagulation, and consequently in the amplification of the responses characterizing thrombosis. The phospholipids are tightly linked to these phenomena. First, they play a mainly structural role because of their particular physicochemical properties which allow the formation of the phospholipid double-layer typical of the biological membranes. They also have a more dynamical contribution to platelet physiology, through the activation of their metabolism during the platelet physiology, through the activation of their metabolism during the platelet stimulation, the release of arachidonic acid and the procoagulating properties of certain of them, such as phosphatidylserine. At last, a phospholipid structure was recently discovered for a potent platelet aggregating factor, the PAF-acether.
