Abstract
Cholesterol is eliminated from the body mainly via the gastrointestinal tract into feces as cholesterol itself or after hepatic conversion to cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid as these primary bile acids or as their bacterial transformation products. The magnitude by which cholesterol elimination takes place as bile acids can be measured by quantitation of fecal bile acids or by the isotope dilution technique. In the present paper some parameters of bile acid metabolism are dealt with in different hyperlipoproteinemias mainly on the basis of our own experience on fecal bile acid measurements. The capacity to produce bile acids has been tested after administration of cholestyramine. In a recent review a computerized analysis has been performed on reported fecal steroids of individual subjects with different hyperlipoproteinemias.1
