Abstract
Rice, Oryza ssp., is the world’s most important food crop. It was grown on 145 million hectares which yielded 435 million tons of grain in 1982. It is the principal food of more than half of the world’s population. Although rice is grown in about 90 countries spread over 6 continents, more than 92% of rice is produced and consumed in Asia. Yields of rice are disappointingly lower in the less developed tropical regions, where most of the rice is grown, as compared with yields from temperate areas. In tropical Asia, for example, the average yield is 2.0 t/ha as compared with average yields of more than 5 t/ha obtained in such temperate zone developed countries as Japan, Korea, USA, Australia, Spain, Italy and others.
