Corpus Callosotomy

Surgical Technique

  • Chapter
Book cover Epilepsy and the Corpus Callosum

Abstract

The evolution of surgical technique in the region of the corpus callosum considerably antedates the recognition of the commissure’s role in the propagation of the epileptic discharge. Dandy’s (1922) approach to the pineal region and subsequent procedures to gain access to third ventricular pathology (Stein, 1977; Rhoton et al., 1981; Apuzzo et al., 1982) are familiar and well established. Division of the corpus callosum for control of seizures has been less widely practiced, but shares many of the fundamental principles of the older procedures.
