Abstract
Solvent abuse currently causes >60 deaths each year in Great Britain and could be detrimental to the health and development of teenage users. Epidemiological surveys to detect possible health effects can be considerably strengthened by toxicological analysis but this can be difficult by conventional techniques for ethical reasons. Breath has unique advantages as a specimen in such circumstances, being readily obtainable by non-invasive means.
