Abstract

Inorganic gas and liquid chromatographic analysis is finding application in bioanalytical areas. Characterization methods for complex samples include specific element detection. Plasma emission spectroscopy exhibits notable advantages for such detection by virtue of versatility, sensitivity, selectivity and multi-element capability. Among the plasma systems which have been evaluated, the atmospheric pressure microwave plasma has shown wide suitability for analysis of both metallic and non-metallic elements; high-resolution capillary GC maximizes detection limits. Thus, trialkyl Pb compounds have been determined, directly and as organometallic derivatives, in aqueous samples down to ppb after suitable extraction and pre-concentration procedures. Other published examples include characterization of fluorine-containing metabolites in blood plasma and determination of boronate esters and steroidal carboranes.
