Sound Spectrographic Cry Analysis of Pain Cry in Prematures

  • Chapter
Infant Crying

Abstract

The literature on cry studies in the newborn contains few investigations dealing with the premature baby. Michelsson (1971) reported data on sound spectrographic cry analysis of 75 symptomless prematures. The results showed that the pain cry of the prematures differed in many respects from that of the term infant. The cry characteristics were found to be more dependent on the gestational age (GA) than the birth weight. The more premature the newborn baby was, the more different the cry was from that of full-term infants. The cries became more high pitched and shorter with decreasing gestational age. Biphonation and glide became more common.
