Abstract
Identification of an organic compound from its mass spectrum is now a successful and well-established practice. Although it may not always be possible to determine the molecular structure of an unknown compound, there is always some useful information to be derived from the mass spectrum. An observable molecular ion will give the molecular weight and under high resolution the elemental composition. Fragment ions, either singularly or in related clusters, reveal some of the building blocks that are comprised in the molecule. Isotopic clusters indicate the presence of certain elements, such as the halogens, sulfur, and carbon.
