Toxic Oxygen Products in Shock

  • Chapter

Abstract

Oxygen is essential for the production of energy and the survival of aerobic organisms, but oxygen is toxic to life at concentrations only slightly greater than that present in air. Survival is possible only by virtue of the development of an elaborate set of defense mechanisms (Halliwell, 1978; Haugaard, 1968).
