Sea of Japan and Okinawa Trough

  • Chapter
The Ocean Basins and Margins

Abstract

The northeastern margin of the Asiatic continent is fringed by trench—arc—back-arc systems. Best known is a system consisting of the Japan Trench—Nankai Trough, Japanese island arcs, and the Sea of Japan. The Sea of Japan is, as a whole, a marginal sea with an area of about 1 million km2, bounded on the north by Sikhote Alin eastern Siberia, on the west by the Korean Peninsula, and on the east and south by Honshu and Hokkaido, Japan (Fig. 1.).
