Abstract
The role of the nurse in the hospital setting has undergone significant changes during the past two decades, evolving from a generalized to a highly specialized set of role expectations. As health care has become more complex and specialized, so has the role of the nurse. The forerunner in this change was the recovery room nurse, who cared for patients during the immediate post-operative period of stabilization and recovery from anesthesia. As advances continued to be made in new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, intensive care units were established for those patients with more serious and complex illnesses (1). Nurses who staffed the intensive care units assumed even greater responsibilities than the recovery room nurse and gained their expertise through on-the-job learning or continuing education.
