Abstract

Previous studies have revealed that mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the zmost common risk factor for cerebral ischemic events in younger patients. In a prospective study using transthoracal two-dimensional echocardiography we found MVP in about half of more than 70 cases.

It is known that a prolapse of the aortic valve (AVP) may be associated with a MVP. Transthoracal echocardiographic diagnosis is however limited due to anatomical and technical reasons. On the other hand, an AVP seems to be even more relevant than a MVP with regard to possible cerebral embolic events from the pathophysiological point of view.

Therefore we decided to conduct additional transesophageal echocardiography in the patients of our study. Comparative results of the two methods are presented and discussed.
