Abstract
Sixty-two patients with cardiogenic brain embolism and secondary hemorrhagic transformation by CT were retrospectively studied to determine the timing of hemorrhagic transformation. Thirty-four patients were receiving anticoagulants and 28 were not. In nonanticoagulated patients, hemorrhagic transformation usually occurred on CT done more than 6–18 hours after stroke. No patient with hemorrhagic transformation was known to have a nonhemorrhagic CT at 48 hours.
Hemorrhagic transformation is usually delayed for several hours after embolic stroke, but is usually present by 48 hours.
