Brainstem Mechanisms Governing the Tonic and Reflex Control of the Circulation

Central Nervous System Control of the Heart

Part of the book series: Topics in the Neurosciences ((TNSC,volume 4))

Abstract

One of the classical problems of cardiovascular physiology has been the localization of neurons in the brainstem required for maintenance of normal levels of arterial pressure (AP). Experiments dating back to the mid-19th century demonstrate that removal of the brain rostral to the medulla oblongata had no effect on AP while transection of the spinal cord at the first cervical segment results in its collapse (1). Such studies demonstrated that neurons localized somewhere in the medulla provide sufficient excitation of preganglionic sympathetic neurons in the intermediolateral columns of the spinal cord to maintain vascular tone.
