Abstract
A survey has been made of the conceptual changes that are taking place in our understanding of the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of selected diseases. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of the brain in pathogenesis. A part of our new understanding comes from the realization that symptoms and lesions cannot only be understood in local, anatomical terms, or changes in levels of this or that bodily constituent. Implicit in this statement is the belief that anatomical lesions follow and do not invariably antecede disturbances in function.
