Abstract
The effect of systemic treatment upon survival after mastectomy is reviewed. It is concluded that treatment may have a small effect upon the probability of relapse, it may delay relapse and increase survival after this event. These effects appear to be independent of the major prognostic indicator, axillary node involvement, but are dependent upon the presence of steroid hormone receptors with respect to endocrine therapy.
