Abstract

Manganese ions block nerve membrane Ca channels (Baker, Meves and Ridgeway, 1973) and thus interfere with the Cao-dependent synchronous (Meiri and Rahamimoff, 1972) and asynchronous (Kajimoto and Kirpekar, 1972) quantal acetylcholine (ACh) release from motor nerve terminals. However, if Ca0 is removed, adding Mn to the perfusing solution enhances the asynchronous liberation of transmitter quanta from K-depolarized or tetanically activated presynaptic terminals (Kita, Narita and Van der Kloot, 1981).
