Abstract
All cancers are characterized by excessive growth and proliferation of tumor cells. Such malignant cells may arise from mature cells which have lost the ability to respond to normal growth control mechanisms, or alternatively, they may arise from immature cells which have never developed the ability to respond to these growth inhibitory signals. These origins should be reflected in the biologic characteristics of some tumors, and an understanding of the events regulating normal cellular differentiation should provide insight into the altered growth characteristics of these malignant tumors.
