Preliminary observations on the use of the local thermochemotherapy in the treatment of malignant cerebral tumors

  • Chapter
Biology of Brain Tumour

Abstract

The use of local hyperthermia associated to chemotherapy for the treatment of malignant cerebral tumors is very recent.

Following a surgical complete removal, four glioblastomas (three recurrences) were treated with 43–47° C heated water and 20–30 mg. Adriamycin introduced into the surgical cavity. Controlled heating was maintained for two minutes and the procedure was twice performed. Thermochemotherapic treatment was repeated 20 days later.

One patient died 8 days after the second procedure, another patient died for a recurrence of tumor 9 months after the operation, while the other two patients (both recurrences) did not show any neurological impairment at 8 months control.

In the areas surrounding the cavity necrosis was histologically demonstrated 20 days after thermochemotherapy.
