Abstract

Recent developments in magnetic resonance imaging of central nervous system tumors are reviewed. The paramagnetic contrast agent Gadolinium-DTPA has been used in clinical practice over the last year with promising results particularly in distinguishing tumor from edema. More clinical situations are now being recognised in which the relaxation times T1 and T2 of tumors are not increased

For some tumors such as acoustic neuromas sequences have been evolved taking into account the differences in tumor site and consistency.

Pediatric applications have been expanded.

The use of surface coils has resulted in improved image quality particularly in visualising the spinal cord.

Experience has been acquired in follow-up studies of brain tumors and interesting new developments have occurred in imaging the orbit and nasopharynx.

New developments such as the use of specially designed stereotactic frames are anticipated.
