Abstract
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a surface component of gram-negative bacteria, and possesses both antigenic and pharmacological properties. The term endotoxin is used synonymously with LPS in emphasizing its toxic properties. Enterobacterial LPS consists of three regions, i.e., lipid A, core and O-side-chain, the latter which may not be present in certain bacteria. The antigenic specificities of LPSs reside primarily in the O-side-chains but also in the core regions, while the biological properties reside in the lipid A moiety (1).
