Physiology of Hatching

Cyst Nematodes

Part of the book series: Nato ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 121))

Abstract

Cyst nematode hatching has interested research workers ever since Baunacke (1922) first demonstrated that eggs hatch in response to host root diffusates. A natural hatching stimulus, such as diffusate, points to potential control strategies. The gap between theory and field application has yet to be bridged, although several recent developments in research into the hatching mechanisms of cyst nematodes indicate that measures which influence nematode behaviour may eventually be feasible as part of an integrated control programme. Such an approach may avoid environmental problems, which are an increasingly important consideration.
