Cyst Nematodes

Part of the book series: Nato ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 121))

Abstract

Liebscher (1890) reported a disease of pea (Pisum sativum L.) caused by nematodes in an experimental field at the Agriculture Institute at Göttingen. At first he attributed the damage to a strain of Heterodera schachtii Schmidt, but further studies on morphology and biology led to the conclusion that the nematode was a new species which was named Heterodera goettingiana (Liebscher, 1892). Damage to pea crops by H. goettingiana was reported a few years later in Great Britain (Theobald, 1912) and in the district of Gironde in France (Capus, 1917; 1918). However, investigations on the biology and pathogenicity of the nematode were not undertaken until much later (Goffart, 1941; Franklin, 1951).
