Preparing Analysis of Hubble Space Telescope Data in Europe

Abstract

Since no image processing system will ever be complete, the best system is the one which is the easiest to supplement. We therefore discuss various solutions to the typical problems encountered in porting application programs between systems: (a) standard interfaces to data bases and peripheral devices, (b) interface emulation, (c) physical replacement of calling sequences, and (d) restriction to subroutines only. The homogeneity of the importing system is seen as an important requirement for the success of any of these methods. Corresponding provisions within ESO’s image processing system MIDAS are described.
