Abstract
Drilling fluids are required in rotary drilling for oil and gas exploration and development. Eventually drilling fluids, also called mud, and cuttings must be disposed from the drilling vessel. Although these drilling discharges can be barged ashore or to other sites at sea for disposal, cost and operational considerations favor onsite disposal, by either overboard discharge or shunting through a pipe to some depth. A vignette model is developed to track the movement and depletion of selected pollutants in this multimedia marine environment. The seabed media involved are the solid/sediment, the porewater and the benthic boundary layer.
