Therapy for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

  • Chapter
Ethnic Psychiatry

Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Psychiatry ((CIPS))

Abstract

Asian Americans constitute a highly diverse group of people who populate most of the planet Earth. To be asked to discuss the therapy of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and to respond to such a request as if this were a feasible and think-able undertaking, requires a bit of grandiosity. Thus, from the very beginning I have to begin with a caveat. I must acknowledge the diversity and complexity of the peoples of Asia and the Pacific Islands, and for that reason this chapter cannot pretend to outline therapy for each and every cultural subgroup. The task becomes even more monumental when one considers the generational differences, the special cases, and the individual differences that are important among all human beings regardless of ethnicity.
