Abstract

The speed with which connections can be set up depends not only on the availability of operators, switching equipment, and line equipment and cables, but also on the time taken for the system to respond to the users’ demands. On connections set up via an operator, the time taken by the operator to accept the demand for a connection; the accuracy with which the demand is recorded; and the operator’s competence in setting it up determine the speed of connection. The effectiveness with which the user responds to and works with the operator is also a major determinant of speed of connection. The effect of the user passing his demand in a concise, efficient manner and an equally efficient operator response is exemplified by the communications between airline pilots and air traffic controllers.
