Measurement of Cytoplasmic Calcium Activity with Ion-Selective Microelectrodes

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIAS,volume 104))

Abstract

Several different techniques are available for measurement of cytoplasmic calcium activity (or its logarithmic equivalent, pCac). Optical probes involve monitoring changes in one of a number of signals: dye absorbance, fluorescence intensity or bioluminescence. A conceptually different approach stems from the use of Ca2+-selective electrodes in which the sensor is embedded in a liquid membrane plugging the tip of a micropipette.
