Abstract
The photoactivation of phytochrome by red light initiates many important developmental changes in plants (Hendricks and Van Der Woude, 1983). Some phytochrome-controlled responses are saturated at fluences of light as low as 3 × 10 −12moles/cm2 (Mandoli and Briggs, 1981). For such minute amounts of light to have major effects on the way a plant grows and develops, this initial stimulus must be amplified by some transduction mechanism, some linked sequence of biochemical changes that ultimately affects many facets of a plant’s metabolism.
