Abstract
The electromagnetic spectrum extends from the very short wavelengths of X-rays (~ 0.1Å) to radiowaves, which can be thousands of metres in wavelength. The region of the spectrum encompassing the ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation is termed the optical region and extends from 0.01 µm to 1000 µm. Radiation detectors suitable to operate in this region are called photodetectors.
