Abstract
In his contribution (Chapter 32), van Kampen has presented a detailed account of the background, objectives, research projects and development options that played a role in the study of the Zuiderzee Scheme. He describes how this enormous project was developed and carried out over the course of the last hundred years. Although social changes, changes in aims and objectives and scientific and technical developments have influenced the way in which this scheme was implemented, the main elements of the project and its overall concept have generally remained intact. The construction of the barrier dam and the reclamation of parts of the enclosed water area have indeed enriched the Netherlands’ land resource.
