Abstract--

In 1906, a storm flood swept over the shorelands of the Zuiderzee, a shallow, almost landlocked bay of the North Sea in the centre of the Netherlands. Although plans for land reclamation of the bay had been prepared since 1886 it took 12 more years of discussion before the Dutch people could pluck up the courage to decide that the Zuiderzee was to be enclosed (dammed), so virtually precluding the possibility of similar future disasters. At the same time and because the Zuiderzee was shallow with fertile deposits it was possible to reclaim part of the Zuiderzee by means of artificial drainage. Since the 1930s, considerable areas have been reclaimed; many farms, villages, even cities, and nature reserves have been founded 4 or 5 metres below sea level. The work is still continuing.
