Abstract
This paper presents the results to date of an ongoing exercise to identify and implement an appropriate philosophy for laboratory teaching within a Mechanical Engineering Department. The overall objectives of the course are stated and the measures taken to achieve them described. The key features of the programme are:-
-
i)
the appointment of a course coordinator to oversee the whole of the three year programme.
-
ii)
gradual progression during the three years from controlled assignments, through open-ended experiments to project based work.
-
iii)
the integration of computerised data acquisition and computer aided learning into the overall scheme.
