Investigation of the Infertile Couple

  • Chapter
Gynecologic Endocrinology

Abstract

Infertility is defined as a failure to achieve conception during 1 or more years of intercourse of adequate frequency without the use of contraception. Primary infertility indicates those patients who have never conceived. Secondary infertility indicates previous pregnancy but failure to conceive subsequently during one or more years of unprotected intercourse. Absolute infertility or sterility indicates those individuals who have an absolute factor preventing conception. Relative infertility involves conditions that are potentially correctable after diagnosis.
