Abstract
The pituitary gland arises from the conjunction of an evagination of the oral cavity (Rathke’s pouch) and a process of neural ectoderm growing down from the ventral portion (hypothalamic region) of the diencephalon. The former becomes the adenohypophysis (anterior pituitary) and the latter the neurohypophysis (posterior pituitary); by 10–12 weeks of fetal life, both appear to be functionally linked to the hypothalamus.1
