Embryo Transfer in Animals

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developmental Biology ((DEBO,volume 4))

Abstract

Almost 100 years have passed since Heape (1891) reported the transfer of two-cell embryos from an Angora rabbit to the oviducts of a pregnant Belgian hare. This experiment showed that the reproductive tract of the recipient had no effect on the genetic composition of the fetus, because transferred embryos resulted in Angora offspring. The basic strategies behind embryo transfer remain the same today: synchrony of reproductive cycles between the recipient and donor, use of appropriate genetic markers, and transfer of preimplantation embryos to the lumen of the reproductive tract.
