Abstract
Creative reading of the literature has led to allegations that poly-(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) is a very old polymer that was prepared first by Friedel and Crafts in 1888 from benzene and sulfur in the presence of aluminum chloride (AlCl3). These allegations have become entrenched in the literature and are repeated in encyclopedia and review articles1–4 among others. One article states that this reaction can be carried out either with or without catalyst and results in 50–80% yields of phenylene sulfide polymer with thianthrene as a by-product.2
