Abstract
This chapter first reviews some definitions and concepts of heterogeneous catalysis and catalytic science, following the review by Spencer and Somorjai.(13) These authors point out that the word “catalyst” was invented by Berzelius(261)to describe the property of certain substances which facilitate chemical change without being consumed during the reaction. Catalysts aid the attainment of chemical equilibrium by reducing the potential-energy barriers in the reaction path.
