Our concern in Chapters 2 and 3 has been with static properties of molecules adsorbed on surfaces. In this chapter, the discussion of dynamic properties will be introduced by considering the vibrational frequencies of molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces. There are a number of techniques available that give useful information on these frequencies and will be briefly referred to, but the main attention will be focused on what can be learned from neutron inelastic scattering about molecular vibrational frequencies.
