Part of the book series: Handbook of Behavioral Neurobiology ((HBNE,volume 8))

Abstract

Over the past decade, increasing experimental evidence has attested to the importance of olfaction in the early development of rodents. It has become clear that odor cues play a critical role in behaviors essential for survival; these include nipple location and attachment and home and maternal orientation, among others. The predominant role of this sense in developing rodents, its relative maturity at birth in contrast to other sensory systems, and its behavioral plasticity are all properties that invite vigorous neuroanatomical and neurophysiological investigation. This is especially important because olfaction is a sensory system of which our understanding of its basic processes lags behind that of other sensory systems.
