Ultrasound Measurement of Fetal Growth

  • Chapter
Human Growth

Abstract

Until about a decade ago, almost no direct information was available concerning the growth patterns of the normal fetus. The human fetus is very effectively insulated from its external environment, and no direct clinical methods exist for assessing its size in utero. The susceptibility of the fetus to damage from ionizing radiations obviated the use of repeated radiographic examination and thus in the preultrasound era our information about intrauterine growth was largely derived from indirect clinical methods or was based on measurements of aborted fetuses and prematurely delivered infants (Trolle, 1947; Thomson et al., 1968; Bagnall et al, 1975).
