Abstract

Phosphorylation/dephosphorylation has proven to be a prominent control mechanism in biology for activation or repression of the activities of a variety of proteins. Considerable progress has been made concerning the regulation of protein kinase activity of many cell membrane receptors for hormones and growth factors by phosphorylation. More recently, steroid hormone receptors, located within the cell, have been found to be phospho-proteins as well, and there are a few reports suggestive of protein kinase activity either being inherent to, or closely related to glucocorticoid and estradiol receptors. This chapter surveys recent work on the phosphorylation of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), the evidence that it either is, or is closely associated with, a protein kinase and some of the activities of this kinase.
