Abstract

There is considerable overlap between the normal ultrastructural morphology of the rectum and other parts of the large intestine. Ultrastructure of the colon is described in detail in Chapter 8. The present discussion will focus on some specific aspects of rectal ultrastructure. Emphasis will be placed on those aspects of ultrastructural morphology bearing a close relationship to tumori-genesis. Since epithelial neoplastic diseases of the rectum are the most common tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, the present discussion will concentrate on the mucosa.
