The colon: Normal ultrastructure and pathological patterns

  • Chapter
Ultrastructure of the Digestive Tract

Part of the book series: Electron Microscopy in Biology and Medicine ((EMBM,volume 4))

Abstract

This chapter will focus on the large intestine, which begins at the ileocecal valve and includes the cecum, appendix, ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid colon and rectum. The histologic and ultrastructural organization of the colon reflects its main function, the absorption of water and elimination of undigested material, a process facilitated by mucus secretion.
