Abstract

It has been suggested but not established that atrial natriuretic peptides (ANP) may have a role in the mechanisms of hypertension and associated exaggerated natriuresis during volume expansion. The present investigation was undertaken to examine the influence of chronic salt loading on the circulating plasma levels of ANP in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and to study the concomitant changes in blood pressure as well as urinary excretion of sodium. Normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were studied as controls under the same protocol.
