Abstract

The mechanisms of the calciuretic effect of furosemide was investigated in the diluting segment with electrophysiological methods. Furosemide completely inhibited Ca-reabsorption and reduced transepithelial voltage to zero. Ca-reabsorption revealed a linear voltage dependence. Nifedipine failed to block a transcellular route of Ca-reabsorption. From these data we conclude that Ca-reabsorption occurs paracellularly and furosemide reduces its electrical driving force.
