Abstract

The antagonists of Aldosterone are considered the first choice diuretics in the treatment of ascites from liver cirrhosis. They are able to induce a slow and progressive weight loss without potassium depletion(l). Their long term use causes anyway hyperkalaemia and hyperchloraemic acidosis (2) and their efficacy is reduced in long lasting ascites. In such a case the more drastic loop diuretics are required. These have however serious side effects in cirrhotics more than in other patients (hypokalaemia, encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome) (3).
