Abstract

The radioactive microsphere technique is the most accurate method currently available for measuring regional myocardial perfusion in experimental animals. It is based on the principle that microspheres distributei n proportion to regional myocardial blood flow if the basic criteria of the technique are satisfied (1). However, this assumption is not substantiated since microsphere distribution is determined indirectly from measurements of tissue radioactivity. Furthermore, the use of relatively large tissue samples for accurate measurements decreases spatial resolution and, therefore, prevents studies of regional myocardial perfusion in smaller animals.
