Abstract

Since 1979, CAPD and CCPD have become popular forms of chronic dialysis in children. In some pediatric dialysis centers, more than 75% of patients are treated with peritoneal dialysis. This change from hemodialysis to CAPD is based on the perception that CAPD has certain advantages for children that hemodialysis does not have. Although some of the alleged advantages are related to differences inherent in the way the treatments are performed (e.g., home versus center), others are related to the effectiveness of the treatments in controlling the biochemical and physiologic abnormalities of uremia. There have been few studies that have directly compared the effectiveness of CAPD and hemodialysis in controlling these abnormalities in children, however. There also have been few studies comparing the long-term outcome of CAPD and hemodialysis in children.
